A Tax Residency Certificate (TRC) is an official document issued by the Federal Tax Authority that proves a person or company is considered a tax resident of the UAE for tax purposes.
Its main importance is to help avoid double taxation and allow access to benefits under Double Taxation Agreements (DTAs), such as reduced withholding tax or tax refunds in foreign countries. Tax residency is different from immigration residency or holding a UAE visa, and it is also different from being a “Resident Person” under UAE Corporate Tax Law.
A company incorporated in the UAE is generally considered a Resident Person for Corporate Tax purposes, but obtaining treaty benefits abroad may still require a TRC along with proof of management, control, and business substance in the UAE. Therefore, a TRC is important for international business transactions, foreign tax compliance, banking, and supporting UAE tax residency status.
A Tax Residency Certificate (TRC) is issued for a specific tax period or for any selected continuous 12-month period requested by the applicant. If the applicant chooses a tax period, it must relate either to the current tax period or to a previous tax period.
